What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?
Laboratory-grown diamonds are a new source of diamonds grown on
Earth. They are the same as diamonds extracted from the ground –
chemically, physically and optically. Diamond, also known as
diamond, is made up of carbon atoms, like graphite, the main
component of a pencil lead. However, the difference in structure
makes graphite rank only at the lowest grade of 1 on the Mohs
hardness scale, and diamond at the highest grade of 10. The key to
the formation of different structures between carbon atoms lies in
pressure and temperature. Therefore, diamonds can be synthesized by
artificially creating the corresponding pressure and temperature
conditions according to the carbon phase diagram.
How Does A Diamond Grow Above Earth?
There are two basic techniques for carbon to crystallize on diamond
substrates – namely high pressure and high temperature (HPHT)
technology and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology.
During the CVD process, methane gas uses microwave energy to be
activated to a temperature of about 2000-3000 F, causing it to
rupture and release carbon atoms that are deposited onto a diamond
substrate. It grows slowly layer by layer, atom by atom. This is a
natural crystal growth process that leads to similar types of
inclusions and defects that appear in mined diamonds, and once the
process begins, it is beyond human control.
In the HPHT process, diamond seeds (real diamond) are covered in
the growth chamber along with graphite and metal catalysts and
covered with a ceramic casing. As the pressure and temperature rise
to about 55 K Bar and 1500 C, respectively, the carbon atoms are
released from the graphite by a melting catalyst, and the atomic
process of crystal growth begins on the diamond seed. Diamonds grow
layer by layer, atomically over a period of 8-10 days. New diamonds
are cleaned and can be cut and polished just like any other rough
diamond extracted from the ground.
